Information
The village grew and so did the church. The cemetery grew as well.
Tethered to the boundaries of the church grounds, the spirit of the black dog watched over the parish and parishioners. It protected the churchyard from graverobbers and vandals, witches and demons. The villagers told tales that it once had defended the church from defilement by the Devil himself. As the centuries passed, belief in the church grim began to fade to little more than local legend. The dog spirit itself, however, gradually grew stronger, more coherent, more substantial. As it watched over the humans under its care, it learned from them and became ever more human-like in return.
The grim learned to appear in the shape of a man. It learned to speak to the clergymen, and sometimes they listened. It learned to toll the church bells when death was near. It was tied forever to the church, but it was content with its fate and its service until well into the twentieth century.
Then came the blitz, and the airplanes, and the bombs that blew the church apart.
Blasted free of everything familiar, the grim pulled itself back together only to find the church demolished, the cemetery uprooted, and the graves it guarded either moved elsewhere or lost entirely. The grim has wandered, rootless, for the last half-century. It chose a name and cobbled together an identity. It still isn't sure why it survived, where it's meant to go, or what it's meant to do, and it mourns the home to which it can never return.
Despite his best efforts, in damp weather he sometimes smells of wet dog.
He can manipulate physical objects well enough, but he still has noticeable trouble with anything that requires a lot of manual dexterity.
as a dog In actual canine form, he's larger than the average domestic dog--about 36 inches (.9 m) at the shoulder--and his fur is long and black. He has the pointed nose and ears of a Belgian Malinois. When he isn't hiding his spiritual aspects, he appears less tangible, more like a massive shadow vaguely shaped like a dog, and his eyes glow gold. His presence is likely to inspire an overwhelming sense of dread in any unpowered/nonmagical mortal being.
personality Despite his intimidating size and funereal bearing, Liam is gentle with other creatures as a default. Only rarely does he start a conflict. However, he was made as a guardian, and he can be fiercely territorial when he perceives a threat to someone or something he believes to be under his protection. The possessiveness that resulted from past relationships disturbs him, so he avoids long-term attachmentsnot very successfully.

About
Once upon a time, a village built its first church dedicated to a single God. But the pagan customs of the past held over, and beneath the foundation stone, the villagers buried a dog alive to serve as sacrifice and protector for the stability of the structure. The village grew and so did the church. The cemetery grew as well.

Appearance
height 6' 4" (1.9 m)
build Muscular
hair Dark brown/black
eyes Brown
as a man Liam has learned to duplicate a human shape very well, though he sometimes appears shaggier than usual when he isn't paying close attention. Tall and broad, he takes up significant space but dislikes the attention that earns him. He often--unintentionally--wears a sort of "hangdog" expression. Beware the possibility of tragic puppy-dog eyes.build Muscular
